Hi A.R.

Thanks a lot for your comment.
I understand your frustration.. and I totally agree: I don't think it's wrong for young women to be innocent - as long as they are realistically innocent!
This horrific bimbo type trend you are describing and that the kids are following is indeed worrying. Unfortunately, like Charlotte Raven interestingly describes it in her last article ( http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2010/mar/06/charlotte-raven-feminism-madonna-price ) it's probably feminists' own fault: the revolution is not in a pole dance class!
But I don't think Swift puritan and manichean embellishment will help young ladies neither..

Hi ladies,
I didn't know anything about this girl but I found your article very illuminating. It makes me wonder why this naive girl is attacked for her innocent and silly, if you want, lyrics. I found much more anti-feminist and dangerous all the marketing-made girl bands that sing irrelevant songs (badly) about being wild, sexy all the time and have an attitude. You have 9 year olds with make up and "bitch" written on the back of their trousers. And one of the highest rates in Europe for teenage pregnancies. What's so feminist about that? Let girls be girls and sing about their inexperience until they have something (genuine) else to offer. The women that fought for our right to get undressed, professional and able to refuse iron our men's shirts didn't do it for us to become sex kittens that can't even remember who they slept with because they were too drunk or drugged. What kind of girl power is that?
I don't mean to rant, just mean to say we are entitled to a bit of innocence until we loose it (and we all do, after all!).

Hi Marie,

Thanks for your comment.

I was having a chat with a colleague of mine who doesn't have any kids either: we agreed that even if we're not obsessed with the household & family care, we always do think about what to cook for dinner, about that bills to be paid, the landlord to call, etc... when our respective partner would just order a pizza while logging on to World of Warcraft.

But, yes, I do the occasional pizza-WoW night too :-)

Thanks

"Women don’t have as much time to dedicate towards video gaming as men do. Their lifestyle, children, and household care take up a lot of time on the top of their work!"

I would replace that with "Some" women. Not all of us pop out babies one after the other or spend every waking moment with some kind of OCD against surface microbes xD

Hi Trina,

Many thanks for your comment and insight. I think you're right: women are playing video games but stats are biased, and I think this is due to 2 things:

- there is still a gap between the general opinion (media, researches etc..) and cliches, and the reality of women playing video games.

- women do under-estimate or under-report the time they spend playing. This is probably because society does not allow -yet- girls to be girl gamers.

But thanks to Gaming Angels, Mindbubble, and many other women communities, we are restoring the truth :-)

Have a great day too

I agree with your statement that, "But in reality, girl gamers are much more immersed in gaming than the stats like to show, and it’s this ability to adapt their gaming time that the industry should focus on to attract the female segment". I believe stats and studies still don't capture how many females of all ages enjoy gaming. We just wrote an article over at GamingAngels.com that is based on a study where women play social games for 5 hours but don't consider themselves a gamer. I think with some welcoming by the gaming community, we can get new gamers, social gamers, to realize that yes, they are gamers. That is why on GamingAngels.com we highlight many types of gaming and hope that we can help encourage our casual gamers to pick up a console now and then. hehe

Hi Cosmic Bloke,

Many thanks for your comment.

I agree with you: egalitarianism, as a starting point of any relationships between men and women, is probably the ultimate goal of feminism.

Women want the same rights as men, they do not want to feel scared, threaten, patronised, minimised,... only by the simple fact of their gender.
Why did women have to become tougher and show their capabilities 'the hard way'? Probably because they weren't given that chance that men are granted just by the fact that they are..men.

Therefore this may have led to errors: from both sides, misunderstanding of the concepts of feminism (what do women really want?) or misunderstanding of their message and action (see here all the clichés wrongly associated to feminists).

An interesting point to conclude is that the societal pressure you mentioned is, indeed, upon both gender. Jean Kilbourne illustrates this with the excellent video from Media Education Foundation “Killing us Softly 3” ..

Thanks
