I totally agree. Being bullied is still seen by some adults as 'weak' - and I do think people have lost sight of what bullying is. Standard response to 'stand up for yourself' is I think a throw back to that ridiculous 'stiff upper lip' thing!

Really thought provoking piece. I think a predominance of bullying on certain TV Shows dressed up as 'comedy' or 'cleverness' is at the bottom of a lot of it. Also I think that many parents would be so upset by the thought of their kid 'being' bullied that they would rather they were the bully, or as they see it, just expressing their superiority over lesser beings!! Someone close to me (now in his 50's) was badly bullied at boarding school and ran away-his father always despised him for it and even his godfather made a derogatory remark, in front of me, about his running away not many months ago!! He was never forgiven for, what was in their eyes, weakness. But would they have been so upset if they'd found out he was a bully-I think not, unfortunately. And, I really agree when you say that many people have lost sight of what 'bullying' actually is. And also interesting that you say bullies aren't necessarily 'cowards' who can be scared off which tends to be the general line bandied about.

Via Facebook from Adele: This is an excellent book about why women bully each other, how to survive it - http://amzn.to/jOaodE Its also really helped me explain female relationships to my girls.

It also helped me understand why my face 'didn't fit' anymore with a certain group of friends. Bullying doesnt go away -even when you're over 40!

I'm a 16, and a huge fan of Taylor's. Im currently doing a business project on her. I came upon your article and read it. Although you prove you're points well, I must say that girls my age, younger, and older look up to her because she isnt prancing around in skimpy outfits showing us that it's okay to whore ourselves out when it isnt. She sings about happy endings and prince charmings and such, and maybe that is setting us up for dissapointment, but at least she is keeping our wishes and ambitions alive. I would rather learn from Taylor then Lady Gaga, even though I like her as well, because she sings about her and what she writes, girls can relate to it. Taylor is a big role model in today's society, and that's a good thing. Would you rather your daughter being looking up to Miley Cyrus and Lady Gaga (who wears almost NOTHING in her videos) or aritists like Taylor who tell us that it's okay to have their innocence it's okay to dream? That's my opinion.

Totally dependent upon how much of your hair is grey! I tried to let mine go grey naturally but because I'm only about 25% (ahem) grey my hair just looked a bit dirty and dull. Also, some areas are still my natural dark colour so instead of having a mane of silver tresses, I just looked a bit scruffy. It certainly didn't look stylish! Jules is right, there is nothing worse than growing out roots contrasting against a line of permanent hair dye. I have no idea how you go about growing out hair colour without looking a state - big hat perhaps?

I think it all depends on the shade as to whether you can carry it off. I used to work with a really striking woman with a short but sassy cut, but her grey toned in with her naturally blonde hair. When you have brown hair, just bits of grey in it just doesn't look good I'm afraid. And as Ceri says once you're dying your hair it's difficult to transition into your natural colouring. Until I've got a lot of grey I'll stick to dye too and this means more regular trips to the hairdresser as before I had any grey hairs I didn't mind having dark roots but now I can't stand seeing roots with grey in them. Which reminds me-one of my pet hates is older women who dye their hair an unflattering shade of red and then have grey roots-shudder-sorry!!!
